IT TAKES AN ELECTION FOR SCOTT MORRISON TO FINALLY USE FAILED DISASTER FUND

Today’s announcement that Scott Morrison will finally unlock his failed, $4.8 billion Emergency Response Fund is too little, too late.

It’s a travesty that it takes an imminent election before Scott Morrison promises to use a fund that has done nothing but earn interest in the three years since it was established.

This fund could have built flood levees, drainage improvements, cyclone shelters and bushfire evacuation centres to keep Australians safe.

Instead, it’s become a cash cow for Scott Morrison and his Government, earning them over $830 million in interest.

In three years, it has not spent a cent on disaster recovery or even started building a single disaster mitigation project.

Tragically, it’s Australians who’ve paid the price for Scott Morrison’s incompetence, through floods, cyclones and bushfires.

Australians deserve a government that plans ahead and prepares for the natural disasters we know are coming.

That’s why an Albanese Labor Government will revamp the failed ERF to create a new Disaster Ready Fund.

Up to $200 million per year will be invested on disaster readiness to protect lives and livelihoods. Labor’s fund will build the flood levees, bushfire evacuation centres, drainage systems and cyclone shelters needed to keep Australians safe, keep their properties safe and reduce the massive cost of repairs when disasters hit.

Labor will continue to fully fund disaster recovery through the usual budget arrangements, but our Disaster Ready Fund will provide a permanent, dedicated fund for disaster readiness.

Australians shouldn’t have to wait for an election before their government decides to keep them safe.
