GOLD COAST TO LOSE VITAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUPPORT IF FEDERAL CUTS GO AHEAD

March 14, 2017

Gold Coast victims of domestic and family violence risk losing crucial legal support, if the Turnbull Government’s cuts to Community Legal Centre funding proceed.

Starting from July 1, Community Legal Centres across Australia will have their annual Commonwealth funding cut by 30%.

Locally, this means the Gold Coast Community Legal Centre risks losing both of its domestic and family violence lawyers, leaving victims without legal support.

We visited the centre today to hear firsthand how the Turnbull Government’s cuts are going to hurt the Gold Coast. In short, the loss of 30% of its Federal funding would mean the Gold Coast CLC will no longer be able to provide specialist domestic and family violence legal advice.

This is the absolute last thing the Gold Coast needs, as reports of domestic violence are on the rise on the Coast.

Over the past four years, the number of domestic violence cases the Gold Coast Community Legal Centre has handled has risen from 60 to 890. That is a shocking fourteen fold increase.

Despite this, the Federal Government is determined to gut our local CLC, which is providing a vital service to desperate women and children fleeing from family violence.

As usual, our four Gold Coast LNP MPs have turned a blind eye, while their own government proceeds with these cuts.

In government, Labor will ensure CLCs are adequately funded. It’s time our LNP MPs got the same commitment from their own government.

A FAIR GO FOR AUSTRALIA
