Yesterday’s hearing into the Crime and Corruption Commission’s Operation Belcarra put the arrogance of the Gold Coast LNP on full display.
In the hearing a number of serious allegations were heard against a number of Gold Coast LNP operatives, concerning the 2016 Gold Coast City Council elections.
Chief among them were allegations against Stuart Robert and his Fadden Forum.
It’s not the first time the Member for Fadden has found himself in hot water. Time and time again we have seen Stuart Robert put his own job over the Gold Coast.
For too long the LNP has felt it can take the Gold Coast for granted, without consequences. Now the chickens are coming home to roost.
Among the allegations addressed yesterday was the admission from “independent” councillor and former Stuart Robert employee, Kristyn Boulton that two thirds of her campaign funding came from LNP fundraising vehicles.
Stuart Robert also told the hearing that he sought LNP permission to fund “independent” candidates in the 2016 elections, because he didn’t want Labor to gain a foothold on the Gold Coast.
I have full faith that the CCC will get to the bottom of these allegations. But if there’s one thing that the Inquiry yesterday proved without a doubt, it’s that the LNP is taking the Gold Coast for granted.
The arrogance that the LNP has displayed is symptomatic of a party that has had a stranglehold on Gold Coast politics for too long, and shows why the local LNP needs a cleanout.
If the allegations from yesterday’s hearing are true, the LNP have lied to the people of the Gold Coast and those who have lied should face the consequences.
